2010 Knitting Challenge

Year of the Sox Stack

I like goals and challenges. I like striving to reach some lofty goal that appears insane.

Last year I decided to make 2009 the Year of the S(ox) according to the Chinese calendar. I still have a few weeks left on that goal as the Chinese New Year isn't until February 14th. My goal was to knit 12 pairs of socks for myself. I've knit 6 solid pairs so far and have three more in the works. I'm hoping to get at least two of those done by the 2/14 deadline which means I will have knit 9 of the 12 required pairs. Now while I won't make my goal, I'm still pleased with what I've accomplished. I learned some new things and have a full sock drawer now.

Clothilde Day 3

This year though, I've decided to hook my wagon to the 10 Shawls in 2010 group on ravelry.

On January 1st, I cast on for the Clothilde shawl and set to knitting. I'm about 75% done with my first shawl and I'm so excited for this project. I am going to have to take a short break from it when I finish Clothilde so I can finish my sock challenge.

You can follow my progress on Ravelry or on Flickr.

Year of the S(ox) - Midpoint

Blue Socks

We're almost at the midpoint on my Year of the S(ox) project and I'm chugging away full force.

I recently finished two pairs of socks. The first was a simple sock in Socks that Rock in Azure Malachite. This skein was yarn was actually the very first Socks that Rock yarn that I had ever encountered. I won it in some contest somewhere a very long time ago. I'm glad that I finally used it because the colors are so lovely.

Crows Feet Finite

The second pair of socks that I finished were my Crow's Feet socks in Malabrigo Sock.

I had a bit of a problem with these socks initally because I was knitting them on size 0 needles instead of size 1 as the pattern indicated. When I finally ripped them out and added some stitches, the pattern fell into place. I love this pattern and I love this yarn which mades for a pretty perfect pair of socks.

Crows Feet Done

I have two more pairs of socks (Child's First Socks and Charade) on the needles and am working fast and furious on them.

Sox Progress

Socks in Progress

The Year of the S(ox) is well underway and I've gotten really good at starting socks. I currently have three socks on the needles. In my defense I did finish one of the socks on the bus today and I did cast on for the second sock in the pair so I'm narrowing it down.

The Grey socks are my Malabrigo socks and I am really enjoying the yarn. However I've had to rip back to the ribbing on this yarn twice. The first time the socks were so tight that I couldn't get them over my feet. The second time I mis-knit so badly that the only way to save them was to start over.

The Green socks are my March socks in Jitterbug. I'm doing a very basic simple sock pattern and it is going quickly. The drive from Seattle to Portland and back this weekend provided me with great knitting mileage.

The Pink socks are the Child's First Sock by Nancy Bush. I'm nearly at the heel and I am also loving this pattern. I do not however love that I have to concentrate when I knit this pattern. Oh well, challenging is good.

Year of the S(ox)

S(ox) Pair One

I've been watching a few of my friends as they take part in NaKniSweMoDo. I so wanted to join along but knew that I just wouldn't be able to complete 12 sweaters this year. So instead I have decided to complete 12 pairs of socks for myself. Yes, I do plan to be selfish and not share these socks. It feels good to do that.

I was discussing this plan with Jessica and Meg at knitting on Chinese New Year and they decided that this year should be the Year of the S(ox).

I decided to do a simple style for my first pair since I decided on this plan so late. I have some ideas floating around for the other sock patterns but one think I have plenty to spare of is the actual sock yarn. I don't think I'll need to buy any yarn for this project!
